Internet trolls have dark triad personality types

We all know what internet trolls are. They join discussions and post comments designed to upset people or generally disrupt the conversation. They lie, exaggerate, distort and intentionally misunderstand what others say in order to get a response.

They often don’t really care about the topic and will even take whatever side of the argument they feel will be the most controversial. It’s not about winning the argument – for them it’s all a game. They love to upset others.

New research confirms what we already know. These are sick and nasty sadistic people that actually enjoy making others feel bad.

Canadian researches have conducted internet studies of over 1,200 people examining their online activity including commenting. They were given personality tests to determine if there was a link between internet trolling and the Dark Triad of personality: narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy.

They discovered that Dark Triad scores were much higher in those that said trolling was one of the favorite online activities.

You can see in the above diagram that the Dark Triad scores are very high among the trolling group. So high in fact that the report concluded there is a direct correlation between trolls and Dark Triad personality types.

“… the associations between sadism and GAIT (Global Assessment of Internet Trolling) scores were so strong that it might be said that online trolls are prototypical everyday sadists.”

Some trolls confine themselves to harassing people on specific platforms while others take it further and start to pursue their target wherever they can find them online. The underlying personality type or should I say disorder are much the same between a troll and a cyber stalker / cyber bully.

Their objective is to find someone that will engage with them. Someone that will play their game. They set the rules of the game and the rules are not obvious to their victims. They will also change the rules anytime they – in other words it’s a game you cannot win.

Wil Wheatons advice on dealing with Bullies

Fans of Star trek will recognize Wil Wheaton and last year at the Denver Comic Con he was asked a question about being called a nerd. Watch his response in this video where he describes that…

When I was a boy I was called a nerd all the time. Because I didn’t like sports, I loved to read, I liked math and science, I thought school was really cool — and it hurt a lot. Because it’s never OK when a person makes fun of you for something you didn’t choose. You know, we don’t choose to be nerds. We can’t help it that we like these things, and we shouldn’t apologize for liking these things.

The most important thing Wheaton said was that…

When a person makes fun of you, when a person is cruel to you, it has nothing to do with you. It’s not about what you said. It’s not about what you did. It’s not about what you love. It’s about them feeling bad about themselves.

This is relevant to just about all forms of online harassment. It applies to cyber bullies and cyber stalkers. They target you because of problems they have. When we understand them they become an object of pity and power is transferred. They lose power over you and you will feel empowered to deal with their harassment.

This video has gone viral as it should and there has been a follow up by the mother of the girl that asked the question on Reddit.

That was my daughter. She and the girl that bullied her are cool with each other this year. They aren’t in the same class, though. This year has been a good year, but she noticed another little girl in her class kept getting picked on by the other students. She became this girl’s friend and stands up for her when the other kids are being mean.

and then a response from Wheaton on his website

I really try my best to be the person I want other people to be. I don’t always succeed, but when I see things like this and hear from people who have been touched or inspired by something I said or did in a positive way, it reminds me how important it is to do everything we can to be awesome.

These all point to the same thing.  Online Harassment.

Cyber Bully is a term popular for describing online harassment by younger people.

Cyber Stalker is the term used to describe online harassment by adults

Cyber Troll is actually an activity a cyber stalker does in order to bait prospective new victims.

The term I prefer to use is simply cyber stalker. Some cyber stalkers have a personal vendetta against and individual.  This may have happened offline and they take their gripe online.   Other Cyber Stalkers like Evan Iliads have not even met most of the people he stalks and actually lives on a different continent. They setup dozens of fake profiles and use them to harass their victims online with no research, no facts – just lies.  Truth is not an important consideration for Evan Iliadis.

He likes to troll from like the  Live in the philippines forums   and bait people.  He claims to be on a crusade to rid the Philippines of Sexpats and criminals but none of the people he targets can even remotely be described as Sexpats and criminals.

For most cyber stalkers its all just a game.  Evan Iliadis is a prime example of a delusional cyber stalker in his own world.  He started his cyber stalking life after being kicked out of Rotary in the Philippines and created a Rotary hate site VAP RIP OFF where he attacked his fellow Rotarians but they simply refused to respond or comment .  He had to find someone else to play his game and that is when he setup his phoney crusade against Philippines sexpats and criminals. Recently he has changed his title to Crusader against people trafficking but all he does his harass the same group of people over the most trivial and silly things.

Internet Troll Evan Iliadis

War with a Cyber Stalker

I did some keyword and social media research on my cyber stalker and have determined that no one is actually interested in what he has to say.  He has been stalking for five years and claimed to have a following but in reality he is alone.  A few misguided people assisted him early in his cyber stalking days believing his story that he was running a campaign to expose sexpats and criminals in the Philippines on his Philippines Sexpats Wall of Shame ( I link here to a parody site about him and not to his site) .  They soon realised he was a total fraud.

Unfortunately some people have tried to use Evan Iliadis to pursuer their own personal vendetta against others.  This is a big mistake as every single person that has done this has discovered.  Evan run’s his own agenda and when there is conflict with others he will turn on them in a flash.  Evan Iliadis is now totally isolated.

I have estimated that there are only about 20 people in the entire world that follow his cyber stalking and that includes at least ten of his victims.

One the site there are two posts that analysis the interest and traffic Evan’s blogs and campaigns would receive

These two posts, one focused on Search Engine Traffic and the other on Social signals, show that there is zero interest in Evan’s blogs

Anyone that is a cyber stalker should take comfort in such data as it shows that the material a cyber stalker publishes seldom is of little interest to anyone.
